City of Refuge

www.cityofrefugeatl.org

City of Refuge is a non-profit organization in Atlanta dedicated to development efforts leading to the stability and sustainability of the local community. The community is one in crisis but also one with hope and resilience.

City of Refuge provides resources that arrest crisis, restore self-respect, and transition individuals and their families back on the road to independence. They also provide positive social engagement with life-building tools to individuals and families in Atlanta who are living on the margins. Their services span multiple areas of need – from food, clothing, and shelter to job training, placement, housing, healthcare, and education.

Despite overwhelming social challenges, numbers, and need, City of Refuge finds hope every day in their neighborhood. Their hope comes when neighbors offer themselves as models of transformation, returning to help others in need once their lives are restored to paths of health and independence.

The mission of City of Refuge is to bring strength, hope, and light to Atlanta’s last, lost, and least. Those who spend a day walking their streets and talking to those who call City of Refuge their home, their place of work, and their place of service start to see that miracles can and do happen there.

Saving Innocence

http://www.savinginnocence.org

Saving Innocence is working to end the commercial sexual exploitation of children and restore the cultural values of innocence and human worth. Kim Biddle seeks to rescue and restore child victims of sex trafficking through strategic partnerships with local law enforcement, social service providers, and schools, while mobilizing communities to prevent abuse and increase neighborhood safety.

Working closely with the Los Angeles Supreme Court and Los Angeles Probation, Biddle designs protocols and systems to ensure the proper identification, rescue, and treatment of child victims, and to ensure the appropriate criminal charges are brought against the traffickers. She oversees a team who provides crisis response, advocacy, and case management services to minors who are rescued from sex trafficking in Los Angeles County.

Biddle has trained hundreds of social workers, law enforcement, educators, and community leaders on identifying human trafficking victims and implementing intervention and aftercare strategies. She is currently co-creating a first-of-its-kind Survivor Empowerment Program to help survivors receive full restoration and become leaders in their communities, to be implemented throughout Los Angeles County.

From Gangs to Jobs

http://www.fromgangs2jobs.com

“I was a gang member myself until the Lord Jesus Christ transformed my life on June 20th, 2003.”

In 2004, Natividad Mendoza completed the Teen Challenge program in Bakersfield, CA, followed by an internship with God’s Gang in Santa Ana. He graduated from the Bible college offered by Teen Challenge Ministry Institute, where he was blessed with the opportunity to help start a program called Won-by-One God Squad.

Mendoza followed God’s call to Phoenix in 2006, and spent the next two years holding down a full-time job at Ashley Furniture while dedicating the rest of this time to volunteering and implementing programs to help young men.

In 2008, after the economic crash affected their job program in the construction industry, Mendoza started From Gangs to Jobs.

From Gangs to Jobs’ mission is to facilitate transformation within young adults destined for a life of destruction to an active walk on the way to a good future through caring relationships, life skills development, and career placement.

Touching Humanity in Need of Kindness (THINK, Inc.)

http://www.thinkliberia.com

Touching Humanity In Need Of Kindness (THINK) was founded on April 4, 2003, as a humanitarian local NGO. THINK advances the peace process through advocacy and activism, focusing on the rights and wellbeing of women and children, especially the girl child.

The THINK Rehabilitation Home now caters to war-affected adolescent girls and young women, including victims of trafficking, survivors of gender based violence, commercial sex workers, and girls separated from their families because of war. The home provides shelter, protection, medical care, psychosocial support and counseling, and classes on peace building, parenting, and child care.

The home accommodates 25 girls and 10 of their under-five children. Each cycle of girls stays in the home for nine months. While the girls are occupied with the program, THINK does family tracing so that the girls, especially those below 18 years, can be reunified with their parents.

The girls are taken on two field trips during their nine-month cycle. They participate in sports and community service. The holistic approach provides an enabling environment where girls can choose what will best fit their needs. They can then be regular in attendance because they are not troubled with transportation costs.

HOPE International

http://www.hopeinternational.org

HOPE International is a network of microfinance institutions operating in 16 countries around the world. They work to empower men, women, and families to break the cycles of physical and spiritual poverty through the provision of biblically based business training, savings services, small loans, mentoring, and discipleship.

Jeff Rutt founded HOPE International so its gospel-centered work in microfinance and other complementary activities could transform lives both spiritually and physically, providing permanent solutions to poverty, and restoring dignity in families around the world.

By incorporating a strong witness for Jesus Christ and employing a variety of approaches to microfinance, HOPE is an innovator in the field of microenterprise development.

Children's Garden of the Philippines

http://www.childrensgarden.ph

The Children’s Garden was initially established to provide shelter, primary and secondary education for orphaned boys and girls. It was founded in 1954 by Dr. Asuncion Perez, M.D., the first Filipino woman cabinet member of the Philippine Government who worked as Social Welfare Administrator. Perez founded Children’s Garden on her belief that children are the greatest resource of the nation.

In the mid-70s, it became a struggle to find funds and support, and Children’s Garden ceased operation as an orphanage. Through the years, it continued to engage in community service such as livelihood projects, feeding programs, and a day care center.

In 2003, new fundraising efforts paid off. A renewed and much improved home in Sitio Parugan, Antipolo City was built to carry on her legacy. Together, with a group of young volunteers, emerged a commitment: to pursue the mission of the organization and dedicate lives to rescuing street kids.

This passion continues to fuel the team to this day.
